2006 LEXMARK INDY 300 LAUNCHED WITH TOWNSVILLE FAN FARE

Monday, 17 July 2006
For the first time in its 16-year history, Queensland's Lexmark Indy 300 has been officially launched by a rousing display of motorsport demonstrations and entertainment at the northern end of the State.

Today Townsville hosted the official launch for the 2006 Lexmark Indy 300 which will be staged on the streets of the Gold Coast from October 19 to 22.

Queensland Premier Peter Beattie and Minister for Sport Tom Barton launched the event held with tremendous fanfare attended by an estimated 10,000 people throughout the afternoon.

Lexmark Indy 300 Chairman Terry Mackenroth said this year's launch provided a taste of the colour, excitement and atmosphere of the Lexmark Indy 300 to North Queensland.

"Today's Roadshow in Townsville has given North Queensland a taste of what the Lexmark Indy 300 is all about," said Mackenroth.

"We are delighted with the turn-out which Queensland Police has estimated at more than 10,000, and now hope that these enthusiastic fans make the trek south for the Lexmark Indy 300 from October 19 to 22."

Team Australia Champ Car drivers Will Power and Alex Tagliani performed live demonstrations in one of their team's 750-horsepower Champ Cars, while WPS Racing's Max Wilson and Team Sirromet's Alan Gurr provided a great spectacle in their V8 Supercars.

The entertainment also featured demonstrations by the Lexmark Indy 300 support categories - the all-Porsche Wright Patton Shakespeare Carrera Cup, Haymans Electrical V8 Utes and CARSguide Aussie Racing Cars. There were driver autograph sessions, an impressive array of B-Double transporters and merchandise trucks on display, stage parades by Bartercard Miss Indy contestants and a motor bike stunt show, amongst five fours of free family entertainment.

POWER ON to this year's Lexmark Indy 300. This year the event will feature Round 14 of the Champ Car World Series and Round 10 of the V8 Supercar Championship Series - the Gillette V8 Supercar Challenge.

The Wright Patton Shakespeare Carrera Cup, CARSguide Aussie Racing Cars and Haymans Electrical V8 Utes will provide the support on track along with stunt shows, burn out displays, choreographed dance routines, drifting, precision driving challenges and driver parade laps.

The Gold Coast will come alive off the track as well with a quality listing of events set to create a carnival atmosphere across the entire region. The Sea FM Air Show will once again feature in the sky with a spectacular display of Australian Defence Force aerobatics, while the Bartercard Miss Indy and Bartercard Miss V8 Supercar girls will showcase the best sport's modeling talent in Australia.
