The Lexmark Indy 300 Students Day was launched by V8 Supercar star Max Wilson and rugby league legends Scott Sattler and John Cartwright from the Gold Coast Titans at Merrimac State School today.
Wilson, Sattler and Cartwright led an education session at the school about the importance of a healthy and active lifestyle through sport for the youth of today.
Merrimac State School hosted this exciting educational exercise as a reward for being one of the first schools to sign up for Anaconda Students Day which is held on the first day of the Lexmark Indy 300 each year.
Students Day, this year to be held on Thursday October 19, is offered to all primary and secondary students throughout Queensland and Northern NSW.
School classes and teachers can attend the day for free and experience the many educational elements of the Lexmark Indy 300 across diverse subject areas including maths, science, physical education, engineering, music, tourism, event management and art.
Today the sports stars spoke to a school assembly to stress the importance of health and fitness, before Wilson and Sattler joined with students from the school to compete in a fitness challenge.
The launch of Students Day at the Lexmark Indy 300 highlighted the main reason so many schools are a part of the event - the opportunity to provide students with an educational experience in a fun and healthy environment.
Students can get up close and personal with the drivers and personalities involved in the event, attend autograph sessions, get involved in hands-on demonstrations and win prizes.
Last year more than 10,000 students and teachers attended the day, while this year around 1,500 schools will be invited with organisers hoping to attract a record 12,000 students.
Lexmark Indy 300 Marketing Manager Greg Price said Students Day has become an important part of the Lexmark Indy 300.
"Not only is the Lexmark Indy 300 a popular excursion for students but it provides opportunities for teachers to prepare studies in numerous different areas of the school curriculum - science, hospitality, event management, film and television, health and physical education, mathematics and engineering," said Price.
"There will be educational forums held on the Sea FM Stage, a Speed Comparison on track, presentations by Surf Life Saving Queensland and the Australian Defence Force, plus involvement from the Gold Coast's newest sporting venture - the Gold Coast Titans."
WPS Racing V8 Supercar driver Max Wilson was happy to lend his support to launch Students Day.
"I enjoyed the opportunity to speak to the kids about the importance of health and fitness" said Wilson.
"They didn't need too much advice though - a few of those kids were really motoring in the fitness challenge, it was pretty hard for Scott Sattler and I to keep up."
"Today's event is just a taste of what schools can get involved in at the Lexmark Indy 300 Students Day."
Schools interested in attending Students Day can contact the Lexmark Indy 300 Marketing Department on phone 07 5588 6800. Registrations close at the end of August.
All participating students are given an activity pack which includes information, questions and activities relating to the Lexmark Indy 300 and presentations they will experience.
