Team Australia Champ Car drivers Alex Tagliani and Will Power recently undertook an intense four-day promotional tour in Australia, culminating with the Official Launch of this year’s Lexmark Indy 300.
The Aussie Vineyards-backed drivers visited Brisbane, Toowoomba, Ipswich and the Gold Coast on their first day, then flew to Cairns and then Townsville on days two and three, before completing their tour in Sydney and setting back off for Canada to contest Round 8 of the Champ Car World Series in Edmonton.
Tagliani and Power arrived from the United States on Thursday July 13 and set off straight away to a Media Breakfast at Vagelis Café in Brisbane hosted by another motor racing young gun Daniel Pappas from the Wright Patton Shakespeare Carrera Cup.
The Team Australia duo then hopped into the team’s helicopter and flew to Power’s old home town of Toowoomba where they visited his old school – Toowoomba East State Primary School – during their annual sport’s carnival.
Then another helicopter flight took the drivers to Ipswich where they visited the Ipswich Art Gallery’s current exhibition entitled ‘Driving Passion: The Colours of Motorsport’.
To end a busy first day, they then flew to the Gold Coast for an overnight stay at Conrad Jupiters – a Major Sponsor of the Lexmark Indy 300, and further media commitments.
On Friday, Tagliani and Power flew to Cairns to visit the Great Barrier Reef – one of the seven natural wonders of the world. Thanks to Quicksilver Cruises, the drivers ventured out to Green Island, seeing some of the amazing coral and marine life from a glass bottom boat.
Friday night saw the pair fly to Townsville to take in a national netball match between the Queensland Firebirds and the Hunter Jaegars at the Townsville Entertainment & Convention Centre in front of a crowd in excess of 2000 people.
Following this match won by Queensland was an appearance at the Bank Lounge Bar in Townsville for the judging of regional heats for the Bartercard Miss Indy competition.
Saturday was the primary purpose for their visit. The Lexmark Indy 300 Roadshow was held from 12 noon to 5pm, with an exciting, colourful and free community event outside the Townsville Entertainment and Convention Centre.
Following the official welcome and launch of the Lexmark Indy 300 by the Queensland Premier Peter Beattie, a 750-horsepower Team Australia Champ Car and a Holden and Ford V8 Supercar roared along a street circuit starting an action-packed program of entertainment and displays.
This spectacular feature commenced a series of demonstrations performed by the Team Australia Champ Car driven by Tagliani and Power.
Tagliani and Power not only performed live demonstrations but participated in autograph sessions, on-stage interviews and met students from Townsville State High School and TAFE Queensland.
On Sunday, the Team Australia drivers flew to Sydney to appear live on Network Ten’s RPM program.
