CHARITIES CELEBRATE MILESTONES AT LEXMARK INDY 300

Thursday, 10 August 2006
October is a special time on the Gold Coast as the Champ Cars and V8 Supercars hit the streets for the Lexmark Indy 300, and it will also be a special time for the two official event charities, CanTeen and Surf Life Saving Queensland.

During the Lexmark Indy 300 from October 19 to 22, Surf Life Saving Queensland (SLSQ) will hit top gear for its 100th birthday celebrations and CanTeen will be preparing for its biggest Bandanna Day to mark its 21st year of operation.

The timing of the event couldn’t be better for the two charities, as they boost their activities to mark the landmark anniversaries.

CanTeen is the Australian organisation for young people living with cancer and is a charity renowned for its high spirit and dedicated volunteers.

Surf Life Saving Queensland (SLSQ) is Queensland’s peak beach safety and rescue authority, and is one of the largest volunteer based community service organisations in Australia.

Both charities have had a long involvement with the Lexmark Indy 300 and the event has become an important part of their annual promotional activities.

Lexmark Indy 300 Marketing Manager Greg Price said Surf Life Saving Queensland and CanTeen were important parts of the Lexmark Indy 300.

“In many ways, the Lexmark Indy 300 is about giving something back to the community. Not only do we provide an entertainment extravaganza, but the event is an important ‘vehicle’ for CanTeen and Surf Life Saving Queensland to raise much needed funds for future programs.”

CanTeen will be using its partnership with the event to raise its profile and increase awareness of its leading fundraiser, Bandanna Day, which this year falls on the Friday after the Lexmark Indy 300.

CanTeen will be selling bandannas throughout the event, and also taking the opportunity to educate the public about its mission.

They’ll do this by having a marquee at the event, being involved with Anaconda Students Day, being a part of media opportunities, and delivering a guest speech and selling raffle tickets at the WPS Black and Silver Indy Luncheon at Palazzo Versace.

CanTeen Marketing Manager David Tipler sees the Lexmark Indy 300 partnership as being extremely important to the charity.

“CanTeen’s involvement in this October event on the Gold Coast is perfectly timed with our National Bandanna Day,” said Tipler.

“This year we hope to sell one million bandannas nationally, to assist in the funding of new programs and camps for young people living with cancer.”

This summer’s beach season will just be getting underway during the Lexmark Indy 300, and it will also be the start of the 100th year that Surf Life Saving has been saving lives around Australia.

2007 has officially been named “The Year of the Surf Lifesaver” to celebrate this 100 year anniversary.

SLSQ aims to raise a record $50,000 through their partnership with the Lexmark Indy 300 this year.

These funds will be used to purchase important items such as Rescue Water Crafts, which have been used to save numerous lives on Queensland’s beaches. SLSQ will be raising money from donations and selling sunscreen.

Alongside CanTeen, SLSQ will play a major part in Anaconda Students Day and the WPS Black and Silver Indy Luncheon, while also being invited to take part in a number of media and promotional opportunities associated to the event.

SLSQ’s Chief Executive Officer, Mr Brett Williamson OAM, said Surf Life Saving was proud to be part of the Lexmark Indy 300 again this year.

“Surf lifesavers are obviously a vital part of the Gold Coast, so we are very grateful that the Lexmark Indy 300 has nominated us as beneficiary of this fantastic international event again this year,” said Williamson.

“All the money raised will be put back to fund voluntary beach patrols locally by purchasing and upgrading new equipment, training lifesavers and educating the community. The money raised will definitely help make our Gold Coast beaches even safer.”

All the POWER of the Lexmark Indy 300 will be on show from October 19-22. Some of the world’s best motorsport hits the streets of Surfers Paradise as the centerpiece of a four day and night carnival of glitz and glamour.
