QUEENSLANDER SCORES PERSONAL BEST AT DENVER

Monday, 14 August 2006
Queensland driver Will Power produced his best Champ Car result of fourth at the 10th round of the Champ Car World Series held at Denver, Colorado today.

The 25-year-old Team Australia rookie has established himself as one of the rising stars of Champ Car with today’s result that has catapulted him to seventh in the standings, but only three points behind fourth placed Paul Tracy of Canada.

Power, who was born and bred in Toowoomba, has received a massive boost in confidence and has the belief that he can finish on the podium at the Lexmark Indy 300 on the Gold Coast on October 22.

Today’s race in Denver was won by form US pilot A.J Allmendinger (Forsythe Championship Racing) from Brazilian Bruno Junqueira (Newman/Haas Racing) and Power’s main rookie rival Dan Clarke (CTE Racing – HVM).

Power started from 11th position on the grid, and drove a smart and consistent race to climb to fourth, shadowing Clarke in the late stages of the 97-lap race.

“We hung in there today,” said Power. “Everyone’s car changed during the race quite badly as their tyres wore and we leveled off. After that we had a good pace.

“In the earlier stint I just hung in there and kept plugging away. We had two really good stops and then I had a good battle with Dan Clarke in the end, but couldn’t catch him because he had really good pace.

“I’m really happy. This was a great result and I want to thank the whole team for all of their work - this finish goes to them.”

The fourth place finish is Power’s best in Champ Car World Series competition, following on from sixth-place finishes at the previous two rounds.

Power still leads the Roshfrans Rookie of the Year by 22 points over Clarke with four rounds remaining, including his home race at the Lexmark Indy 300.

Allmendinger’s win was his fourth for the season and has taken him to within 32 points of series leader Sebastien Bourdais (Newman/Haas Racing) who has also won the Champ Car title for the past two seasons.

Allmendinger led home Junqueira by 20 seconds, with rookie Clarke claiming his first podium finish. Junqueira and Clarke appeared content to settle for top-five finishes but were promoted to the podium when Tracy (Forsythe Championship Racing) and Bourdais crashed in the final turn of the final lap as the series leader tried to pass Tracy for second place.

The incident dropped Tracy to sixth and Bourdais to seventh, allowing Allmendinger to slice 12 key points off of Bourdais’ series lead.

The day started much as it ended in San Jose, with Tracy and fisticuff foe Alex Tagliani (Team Australia) tangling in Turn One. Tagliani, starting fifth, came up the inside of Turn One and clipped Tracy’s rear wheel, ending Tagliani’s day with suspension failure.

The next round of the Champ Car World Series is scheduled for Montreal on August 27. Queensland will host Round 14 of the Champ Car World Series with the Lexmark Indy 300 to be held from October 19 to 22.
