Today marks 100 days out from the 17th running of Queensland’s Lexmark Indy 300, and there was no better place to mark the occasion than basking on one of the Gold Coast’s famous beaches.
However, local V8 Supercar drivers weren’t exactly soaking up the Queensland sunshine, but instead gaining an insider’s appreciation on the finer points of surfboat rowing from members of Southport Surf Life Saving Club.
In 2007 Surf Life Saving Queensland (SLSQ) is celebrating 100 years of dedicated service on Queensland beaches.
During ‘The Year of the Lifesaver’ the Lexmark Indy 300 is proud to confirm SLSQ as one of two charities to benefit from this year’s event, which begins in exactly 100 days, on October 18-21.
2007 marks the eight successive year the Gold Coast’s premier event has contributed to the fundraising efforts of SLSQ and in total that relationship has netted in excess of $300 000.
Lexmark Indy 300 Marketing Manager Greg Price said being able to give back to the community was a very worthwhile and important activity for the Lexmark Indy 300 team.
“While the Lexmark Indy 300 is about providing a first class entertainment spectacle, it also provides a great fundraising platform for our nominated charities,” Mr Price said.
“This year we are again pleased to support the fundraising efforts of Surf Life Saving Queensland along with CanTeen, who provide valuable services and support to young people living with cancer.
“Both of these organisations provide worthwhile services for the entire community and we know that funds raised will make a difference in many people’s lives.”
With the charitable drive of both SLSQ and CanTeen bolstered by their involvement with the Lexmark Indy 300, there’s now more than 100 reasons for people to book their seats for one of Australia’s biggest and best sporting showcases.
Executive Manager of the Surf Life Saving Foundation, Andy Stephanos, said Surf Life Saving is shaping up for another massive year of fundraising which is further enhanced through the partnership with this iconic Gold Coast event.
“We’re pleased to continue our association with the Lexmark Indy 300 as one of the major beneficiaries of this International event. Funds raised are used to better equip our surf lifesavers throughout Queensland, so ultimately all beach goers benefit from the association,” Mr Stephanos said.
“It’s also very exciting to have V8 Supercar drivers here today getting a feel for one of the numerous activities coordinated by Surf Life Saving.
“During this year’s Lexmark Indy 300, to be held in 100 days time, we will again be raising money through on-track collections and sale of Indy essentials such as sunscreen and ear plugs”.
“Of course it will also be business as usual on Gold Coast beaches with patrols ensuring our beaches are safe during the Indy period,” he said.
SLSQ aims to raise a record $80,000 through their partnership with the Lexmark Indy 300 this year.
These funds will be used to purchase important items such as Rescue Water Crafts, which have been used to save numerous lives on Queensland’s beaches.
