Outstanding mid-year results in both the Australian V8 Supercar Championship Series and Champ Car World Series are providing the impetus towards a massive show during the Gold Coast’s Lexmark Indy 300 from October 18-21.
Yet another double-header racing assault presents itself this weekend for the feature categories, with the Australian V8 Supercars headlining in Ipswich, Queensland while the International open wheel series completes the third and final leg of the Canadian Triple Crown in Edmonton.
The Team Australian duo of Will Power and Simon Pagenaud have the oportunity to snare their first piece of silverware for the season as outright leaders of the inaugural teams competition during round eight of the Champ Car World Series.
For Toowomba born Power he’ll be more specifically concentrating on his own race as he looks to make it two wins in a row following his victory in Toronto a fortnight ago.
Such an effort would allow the 26 year-old Australian to leapfrog current Championship leader Robert Doornbos of Team Minardi USA.
The Champ Car World Series is enjoying the closest championship points race at mid-season this decade, with just two points separating Doornbos (164 pts) and Power (162 pts) and three-time and reigning Vanderbilt Cup titleholder Sebastien Bourdais (Newman/Haas/Lanigan Racing) (161 pts) a further point behind in third.
Sitting just behind the log jam at the top is CDW driver Justin Wilson (138 points.) In the last four races, Wilson has moved from 36 points back to 23 in arrears. It won’t be an easy road for the British driver but it is a challenge he is ready to undertake.
Meantime in the world of V8 Supercars it is nearing the ‘make or break’ point for drivers trying to halt Holden’s Rick Kelly from taking his second consecutive title.
Kelly and his Toll HSV team-mate Garth Tander hold a commanding lead at the top of the championship, courtesy of their consistent and sometimes dominant form during the opening six rounds of the 2007 series.
Tander won last year’s corresponding round at the 3.12km Queensland Raceway circuit and will start as one of the favourites for this weekend’s round.
However, if he is going to be successful in his quest for back-to-back victories, Tander will have to hold off the challenges by the six Queensland-based teams who use the circuit as their nominated test track.
Between these mostly Ford outfits, they’ve won five out of the last six rounds contested at the venue.
