MOTORSPORT HEAVYWEIGHTS ASSERT AUTHORITY

Tuesday, 24 July 2007
Heavyweight Champ Car driver Sebastien Bourdais (#1 Newman/Haas/Lanigan Racing) and V8 Supercar dynamo Garth Tander (Toll HSV Dealer Team) have claimed recent spoils and the championship leads in their respective motor racing categories, as the count down towards this year’s Lexmark Indy 300 from October 18-21 power’s on.

Heading into the Grand Prix of Edmonton there was a three-way battle for the top spot in the Champ Car Series Championship, but in the aftermath, three-time Champion Bourdais showed his experience by winning the event and building himself a handy 20 point lead in the standings.

As Bourdais flourished on Sunday, his two main competitors found nothing but trouble. Robert Doornbos (#14 Minardi Team USA) began the day as points leader but never found a rhythm during the race.

Contact on lap 69 with Alex Tagliani (#8 RSport Racing) in Turn 1 forced the Dutchman one lap down, relegating him to an 11th place finish and dropping him to second place in the standings.

Team Australia’s Will Power began his race from pole position, but slippery paint in his grid slot allowed Bourdais to get the jump at the start and take the lead in the first corner.

The Queensland driver stayed on Bourdais’ tail until the first round of pit stops and returned to racing holding the lead after Bourdias was blocked in pit lane.

Power then forfeited the lead back to the reigning champion on the next series of pit stops and then saw another possible fightback dissolve when a broken piece in his steering assembly forced him out of the race.

There was some solace for the Toowoomba driver as he and Team Australia team mate Simon Pagenaud combined to claim the inaugural Canadian Triple Challenge team’s competition.

Toll HSV driver Garth Tander secured his second consecutive round victory at Queensland Raceway by dominating round seven of the 2007 V8 Supercar Championship Series near Ipswich, Queensland.

Tander steered his Holden VE Commodore to victory in all three 38-lap races throughout the weekend to elevate himself above his team-mate Rick Kelly into the championship lead at the midway point of the series.

Finishing second was Jamie Whincup in his TeamVodafone BF Falcon, who was celebrating his 50th round start in the championship this weekend. The 24-year-old secured his career first pole position during qualifying before going on to record a second, third and fourth in the three sprint races.

Whincup was joined on the podium by his team-mate Craig Lowndes. The multiple series champion elevated himself up the order in each race to continue his rise in the championship standings and moved into fourth place.

Rounding out the top five was young guns Will Davison in his Jim Beam Racing Falcon and Mark Winterbottom, who recorded his best result for 2007 in fifth place aboard his Orrcon/Ford Credit FPR Falcon.
