50 DAY COUNTDOWN TO LEXMARK INDY 300

Tuesday, 28 August 2007
There are just 50 days to go until Queensland will ‘Power On’ during the 17th running of the Gold Coast’s premier event spectacular, the Lexmark Indy 300 from October 18-21.

The countdown milestone coincides with the early stages of construction at the Surfers Paradise racing precinct, which will host Round 13 of the Champ Car World Series and Round 11 of the V8 Supercar Championship Series.

For the contingent of drivers competing for honours in the three-race V8 Supercar challenge, the Lexmark Indy 300 provides a return to single driving duties, following the two-driver endurance rounds at Sandown and Bathurst which form the major preliminary events to the Queensland spectacular.

Ironically, 50 days to this year’s Gold Coast street races marks the eve of 50 V8 Supercar events for former Gold Coast based driver Mark Winterbottom.

The Ford Performance Racing young gun will notch 50 event starts during the Just Car Insurance 500 at Sandown on September 14-16.

While there’s many kilometres still to be covered before V8 Supercar drivers join with the Champ Car World Series on a double headline act during the Lexmark Indy 300, Winterbottom is one driver who is looking forward to another Gold Coast assault.

“It’s a very exciting time of the year with the endurance rounds coming up and then Indy, where Championship points are going to be vital in the run home,” said Winterbottom.

“I finished second on the Gold Coast last year which assisted me towards a third placing overall in the Championship.

“Hopefully this year I can go one better and break through for my first career victory in a V8 Supercar sprint round.

The majority of Melbourne based V8 Supercar teams have been at Winton Raceway the last two days preparing for the upcoming Sandown assault.

Winterbottom will be hoping to continue the momentum from successive top five placings in the Championship at Willowbank in Queensland and more recently at Sydney’s Oran Park Raceway.

“All year we’ve shown that we have good pace in the FPR Falcons and it’s all starting to come together.

“A podium finish to my FPR team mate Steven Richards at Oran Park, plus a couple of top five finishes for me has the entire crew on a high and ready to taste some victory champagne during the next few rounds.

“We converted the win at Sandown last year and then I managed to win a surfboard runner’s up trophy at Indy.

“If we can put that sort of form on the board again it’ll make for a strong finish to the season.”
