Just one more round of the Australian V8 Supercar Series presents itself before the 2007 Lexmark Indy 300 swings into overdrive on Queensland’s Gold Coast from October 18-21.
At the recently completed Just Car Insurance 500 at Sandown International Raceway, TeamVodafone V8 Supercar drivers Craig Lowndes and Jamie Whincup kickstarted their endurance campaign by securing victory during round nine of the Championship.
Lowndes started the 161-lap race after Whincup had taken charge during qualifying where he posted the fifth fastest time. By the end of Lowndes’ first 55-lap stint the three-time touring car champion had elevated the #888 TeamVodafone Falcon towards the front of the field.
Whincup took over during the pit stop on lap 56 and shortly after found a way past Matt Halliday in the Orrcon/Ford Credit FPR Falcon to take control of the race. From that point, Whincup didn’t put a foot wrong and steadily extended his race lead, which was out to 14-seconds when he pitted on lap 111 to hand the driving duties back to Lowndes.
Despite a few nervous moments with lapped cars and threatening weather over the final stages, victory for the defending Bathurst champions was never in doubt as Lowndes stormed to his second Sandown 500 victory in three years.
Toll HSV driver Rick Kelly regained the championship lead courtesy of a second placing in the 500km event, in which he shared the driving duties with former winner of the World Touring Car Cup, Paul Radisich.
Steven Richards secured his second consecutive podium finish aboard the #6 Castrol FPR Falcon when he and co-driver Owen Kelly crossed the line third. The result is Richards’ best at the Sandown venue from his 12 starts and elevated him into seventh position in the championship standings.
After nine rounds in the 14-round championship, Kelly leads the way on 443 points, nine clear of his team-mate Garth Tander. Whincup and Lowndes are third and fourth respectively.
The next round is the Supercheap Auto 1000 at Bathurst on October 4-7 before drivers warm to Queensland sunshine for Round 11 during the three-race, V8 Supercar Challenge, as part of the headline program of the 17th Lexmark Indy 300 on the streets of Surfers Paradise.
