A record attendance of more than 90,000 people witnessed an international extravaganza of motor racing today at the Lexmark Indy 300 on the Gold Coast.

New Zealand’s Greg Murphy won race one of the Gillette V8 Supercar Challenge, while Spain’s Oriol Servia claimed his first ever pole position in the Champ Car World Series. Australian Champ Car debutant Will Power, from Toowoomba, showcased his potential with an 11th position in qualifying, with Gold Coaster Marcus Marshall starting from 13th tomorrow.

Already after three days, more than 211,000 people have filed through the gates to witness some great on-track action across all five categories – the Champ Car World Series, Gillette V8 Supercar Challenge, Wright Patton Shakespeare Carrera Cup, Haymans Electrical V8 Utes and CARSguide Aussie Racing Cars. Crowd Attendance: Thursday 56,786 (record); Friday 64,111 (record); Saturday 90,265 (record); Cumulative Total 211,162.

Champ Car World Series: Spain’s Oriol Servia scored his first pole position in the Champ Car World Series holding out Newman/Haas Racing team mate Sebastien Bourdais in a thrilling battle that went right down to the last minute of the session.

Servia, 31, clocked a fastest lap time of 1:32.616, while the reigning series champion Bourdais will also start from the front row of tomorrow’s grid after finishing fastest in yesterday’s first qualifying.

Previous Gold Coast winners Mario Dominguez (2002) and Cristiano da Matta (2001) will line up on the second row of the grid after finishing third and fourth fastest in qualifying. Team Australia received masses of support and didn’t let the fans down with Alex Tagliani, 9th, Will Power, 11th, and Marcus Marshall, 13th.

Gillette V8 Supercar Challenge: Greg Murphy (Super Cheap Auto Racing) led from start to finish to take out race one of the Gillette V8 Supercar Challenge over 140km in his Holden Commodore VZ.

Craig Lowndes in his Team Betta Electrical Ford BA Falcon was second with Holden Racing Team’s Mark Skaife close behind in third. Russell Ingall (Stone Brothers Racing) in finishing fourth has now extended his lead in the championship over team mate Marcos Ambrose who had to retire after one lap with gearbox problems.

In the Haymans Electrical V8 Utes, Jack Elsegood won race three ahead of Allan Simonsen with the results reversed for the overall round podium. While Paul Kemal beat team mate Travis Edwards in race three of the CARSguide Aussie Racing Cars.
